June or July 2008

Well, it's about time to get together again. The meetings we've had so far have worked out well...so this is something we'll continue for the foreseeable future.

I've been hearing a lot from people that they want an overview of open source GIS..what's available...what tool is best for what purpose...things like that. I recently gave a presentation to a class at UD focusing on open source map servers and several people asked if I can present this again. No problem. So, for the next meeting, we'll focus on open source GIS (a huge topic, I know.)

To help determine what you want to hear about, I have created three polls. Feel free to vote as many times as you want, on all or any of the polls.

I will give an overview of open source GIS in the areas of desktop GIS, map servers, database, and analysis. Mainly I will describe (the best I can) some of the most popular titles out there and give a demo where possible.

*We need others to present as well.* Preferably, if you have any real-world experience with any of these packages, I'm sure we'd all love to hear about them. Any case-studies or geospatial techniques (like image classification, error analysis, editing, contour generation, etc...) would be wonderful. Even if you are only thinking about implementing an open source GIS program/solution for your organization, that would be great as well. These are informal meetings and a place to share ideas, learn from each other, and meet people working on the same things as you.

Also, for a listing of open source GIS packages, with links and more information, take a look at:
