DelGeotech Website Version 2.0

Thanks to everyone for having patience with the Delaware Geospatial Technology Group (http://delgeotech.org/) these past few months. With changing jobs and new responsibilities recently, things have been pretty busy. I've also spent this time researching better ways to support DelGeotech. As well, since the start of DelGeotech almost a year ago, I've learned a lot, about technology and our community. So, several changes have been implemented in the past couple of weeks. Here is what I learned:

  1. People have a strong interest in geospatial technology. We think it's fun, challenging, and increasingly useful.
  2. People will contribute when given an easy mechanism to do so AND when it's clear what to write (answering questions from others is easy; posting a blog entry from scratch is not.) So, I've have significantly simplified the website, cleaning the layout, reducing the number of features, and making existing features easier to use.
  3. Email lists are more effective than online discussion forums. So, I have created a Google Group for DelGeotech. This serves as both an email list AND searchable online forum. The email address is delgeotech@googlegroups.com and the URL is http://delgeotech.org/forums.

FYI: I have requested all current DelGeotech members to be able to participate in this group without needing a Google account or subscribing themselves. That request is pending approval by Google. To begin posting now, send an email to delgeotech-subscribe@googlegroups.com or go to http://groups.google.com/group/delgeotech.

  4. The site should be more Delaware oriented. So, I have added a gallery of Delaware Online Mapping Applications. As well, the main banner of the site rotates through random Delaware images. I have also left the User Showcase in place, and will be promoting and populating it.
  5. People like to meet person-to-person. So, we will keep going with the meetings, approximately every few months. Each meeting will continue to have a focus, usually based on specific technology but also will include real case studies (if possible.) More info on the next meeting will be posted soon.

Note: The DelGeotech Help pages need to be modified to reflect the described changes. I also have to fix some style issues. These will be fixed over the next week or two.
